A Life Story 2004 – 2007

When I started at the then-Daily Southtown, I worked the night shift, and was responsible for cranking out the obits. And on nights when nothing newsy was doing, I had my obits to write. As a baby reporter, I was trying so hard to do everything right, so I really wrote the heck out of the things.

I remember the one that made the editors decide to start up the obituary feature known as A Life Story — a couple married forever and very much in love died within a week or so of each other. It was the loveliest story, and I just told it. Then-managing editor Dennis Robaugh approached me shortly afterwards and laid out the deal: I’d find and write a feature obit every Sunday telling the story of an ordinary person who had died.

When I moved to days to cover courts, I alternated with Will Lee, who took the night shift after me. And he let me write a life story about his grandfather, Bill Stewart.
